Compostable mulch film is bought by growers who want the weed control and moisture retention of plastic mulch without the cost of lifting and disposing of it at the end of the season. Longer rolls mean fewer changeovers on a mulch-laying machine, while shorter rolls are easier to handle by hand on small plots. How to choose the right thickness
Mulch film is made in 15 to 25 microns. Thinner film costs less per hectare and suits short crops and careful machine laying. Thicker film is more forgiving in wind and on rough soil, and is the safer choice for longer crops. The field life, from 3 to 6 months, is formulated to the crop cycle, so tell us your crop, planting date and expected harvest date. The film should last the crop but not far beyond it.
Disposal and storage
At the end of the crop, till the film into the soil instead of lifting it. Our specification states that the film returns to soil within 240 days in industrial composting. In the field the rate depends on soil temperature, moisture and microbial activity, so it will vary by region and season. Remove drip tape, clips and pegs before tilling. Store unused rolls in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
