Product Certifications

Our core product lines carry both DIN and Seedling certification, two widely recognised marks for certified compostable products.

Product certification

Garbage Bags

Our compostable garbage bags are certified by DIN and carry the Seedling mark. DIN certification confirms that an independent body has assessed the product for compostability. The Seedling is the European mark for products certified compostable in industrial composting.

A certified bag lets food waste and the bag go to composting together, which suits kitchens, canteens, housing societies and municipal organics collection.

Apparel Bags

Our compostable apparel and garment bags carry DIN certification and the Seedling mark. They give fashion and e-commerce brands a verifiable alternative to plastic polybags for shipping and storing clothes.

The marks let you show customers that the packaging is certified compostable, not just described as eco-friendly. See how to spot greenwashing before you choose a supplier.

Films

Our compostable films carry DIN certification and the Seedling mark. Certified films give manufacturers, warehouses and food businesses a way to wrap and protect goods without leaving conventional plastic behind.

Film is where unverified claims are most common, so independent certification is the quickest way to check a supplier is genuine.

Environmental & Compostability Certifications

Independent certifications that cover how our products break down: in home composting, in industrial composting, in North America and against the Indian standard.

Compostability

TÜV Austria: Home Compost Certification

TÜV Austria’s home compost certification shows that a product breaks down in the cooler, less controlled conditions of a home compost heap, without needing an industrial composting facility.

Home composting is slower than industrial composting, and the certification applies only to the products tested for it. Ask us which of our products hold it. Read the home vs industrial composting guide to understand the difference.

Home composting depends on temperature, moisture and how the heap is managed.

Compostability

TÜV Austria: Industrial Compost Certification

TÜV Austria’s industrial compost certification confirms that a product disintegrates and biodegrades under the controlled heat and moisture of an industrial composting facility, and that the finished compost is safe for plants and soil.

It is a well-known European proof of compostability and an easy check for buyers who sell into Europe or work with large composters.

Compostability

BPI Certification

BPI is the Biodegradable Products Institute, the main certifier of compostable products in North America. A BPI-certified product has passed independent testing against the compostability standards used in the United States and Canada.

If you export to North America, BPI certification is the mark that composters, retailers and city programmes look for.

Standard

IS 17088 Certification

IS/ISO 17088 is the specification for compostable plastics adopted in India. It sets requirements for disintegration, biodegradation and environmental safety, so the material breaks down in industrial composting without leaving harmful residues.

For buyers, that is a verifiable benchmark instead of a marketing claim, and it is what separates truly compostable from merely biodegradable packaging.

Government & Industry Certifications

Approvals and test reports recognised by Indian regulators and industry institutions.

Government approval

CPCB Certification

The Central Pollution Control Board certificate is the approval Indian rules require before compostable plastic carry bags and products can be marketed or sold. It is issued after the product is tested to IS/ISO 17088 and carries a certificate number and a validity date.

It is how a buyer, a regulator or a municipality can confirm that a bag is genuinely compostable. See how this fits the single-use plastic ban compliance guide.

Industry institute

CIPET Certification

CIPET, the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology, is a Government of India institution that tests plastics. Its laboratory test reports are widely used in India to support compostability and quality claims for plastic products.

CIPET testing gives our products an independent, India-based technical record that sits alongside our CPCB and IS 17088 certification.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

Third-party laboratory testing for chemical safety and food contact.

Chemical safety

SGS: REACH Certification

SGS, a global testing and inspection company, tests our materials against the European REACH regulation, which controls hazardous chemicals, including Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

For importers and brands selling in Europe, it is evidence that the product meets REACH chemical requirements.

SGS: Migration Certification

A migration test checks whether any substance can transfer from the packaging into the food it touches. SGS carries out this testing for our packaging, and passing means it met the migration limits it was tested against.

It matters most for food-contact packaging such as pouches, wraps and bags used by restaurants, cloud kitchens and food brands.

Social & Ethical Compliance

An audit of how we treat people and run our operations.

Ethical audit

SEDEX: SMETA 4-Pillar Certification

SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is one of the most widely used ethical audit methods in global supply chains. The 4-pillar audit covers labour standards, health and safety, environment and business ethics.

Many international brands ask suppliers for a SMETA audit before they place an order. It shows that our products are made responsibly as well as sustainably.

Verify before you buy

Three checks that separate real compostable packaging from greenwashing.

A genuine supplier can answer all three without hesitation. Our greenwashing guide goes deeper.

01

Test to the standard

The material is tested against recognised standards such as IS/ISO 17088 for disintegration, biodegradation and safety. Read what the standard covers.

02

Hold the certificate

The manufacturer holds the certificate, with a number and validity date. See how to check a CPCB certificate.

03

Label it correctly

The pack carries the right claim: compostable, not just biodegradable. Know the difference.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which certifications does Packin Club hold?
We hold DIN and Seedling certification for our garbage bags, apparel bags and films; TÜV Austria home compost and industrial compost certification; BPI certification; IS 17088; CPCB; CIPET; SGS REACH and migration certification; and the SEDEX SMETA 4-pillar audit. Each one is listed on this page, and we add new ones as they are issued.
What is the difference between IS/ISO 17088 and a CPCB certificate?
IS/ISO 17088 is the technical standard a compostable plastic has to pass. The CPCB certificate is the approval the Central Pollution Control Board issues to a named manufacturer or seller after the product passes that standard. The test proves the material and the certificate permits the sale, so you need both. Read more in What is a CPCB certificate?
Is certified compostable packaging the same as home compostable?
Not always. IS 17088, CPCB, BPI, Seedling and TÜV Austria industrial compost certification are all about industrial composting facilities. Home compostability is covered by the separate TÜV Austria home compost certification, which applies only to the products tested for it. Check the certificate for your product, or read our home vs industrial composting guide.
What does the SEDEX SMETA 4-pillar audit cover?
SMETA is an ethical trade audit. The 4-pillar version covers labour standards, health and safety, environment and business ethics, so buyers can see how a product is made as well as what it is made of.
Can I see the certificate before I order?
Yes. Use the contact page to request the certificate details for the product you are evaluating, and mention your product and quantity. We reply within two business days.
How do I check that a compostable packaging supplier is genuinely certified?
Ask for the certificate number and validity date, match the company, plant and product against the issuing body’s records, and ask for the test report. Our guide to spotting greenwashing walks through the full checklist.
